Eastern Box Turtle
(Terrapene carolina)

* Recently,  this well-known creature was placed on the federal list
of potentially threatened species. Clearly, more basic biological
information must be gathered to explain their alarming declines in
numbers in recent years

* The capture and overseas shipping of large numbers of box turtles as part of an ever-
expanding pet trade has certainly contributed to their decline.  But impacts of the ever
present threats posed by highway deaths and increasing expansion of housing
developments into their woodland habitats is not yet known.  The list of death goes on,
back yard flower beds, lawn mowers  smashing, crushing them,  fish ponds that they
are attracted to but have no way of climbing out and drown.   The causes of death
continues to grow.  More can be read from this article/ link below, I thank the author.

SAD DECLINE OF THE EASTERN BOX TURTLE * ARTICLE
This handsome guy is Lemonhead,  I found him  early spring of 2009 on  a
curb in some grass while walking  the dog.  Less than a week later I found
yet another boxie along the street about a block away. A bit bloody, her
foot, and nose,
but a beautiful female I named Mango. ( Pic below)
Lemonhead and Mango
When  I first found them we  created a pool pen for them, 100 lbs
of soil, and some leaves and a nice  place to soak. In the next few
weeks we created a large planted pen, they could live happily and
safely together in.   Photo Below
Lemonhead and Mango moved from the inflatable pool pen to   Turtle
Lane,  the pen is 20 feet long by 4 feet wide, still have to finish planting
some ground  cover, but they are already enjoying their new  home.  My
husband and I built their pen  over the weekend.  July  4, 2009
March 21, 2010 UPDATE: Sadly end of last summer season someone took
Lemonhead from the outdoor pen. Left  his mate Mango, alone.  She dug
down in the dirt  for the winter and today emerged, saw her pretty head and
face sticking out of dirt. She looks great.
Lemonhead and Mango's first meeting, she was
a bit shy, Lemonhead walked up to her and
looked in her shell, it was very cute.   2009
